HomeNatural Hair & Beauty → Why I Decided to Go Natural

So whats it to me? Why am I so big on natural hair? Well I'm not really "big" on being natural, its just that when I made the decision, it was not hard to do it. It started around 2006 or so when I was going through a rough time. I moved out of my parents house, and had to deal with taking care of myself. I had to pay bills, and other things that became a necessity for me at the time. I was the type that would go to the hair salon every week. It was about $40 to $60 a visit, and I would love the same cute hairstyle. I think it was a pincurl, then wrapped. Only on certain occasions would I change, but thats pretty much the original.

It was hard to break not going to the salon. Once a week became once every two weeks, and then a month, then whenever, and then never again. Thats when I began to notice why I wanted to go. It was because I always thought that my frizzy hair needed to be tamed by straightening. Thats all I knew. Though I loved how smooth, pretty and shiny my hair looked when it was in braids, but I never went beyond that.

One day, after talking to my husband...not really talking, mainly arguing about getting my hair done, I realized that I didn't need to show off anymore. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love to look nice, but I hardly go too many places. Most of the time I was getting my hair done because I was going to school, or to work, and I do neither - I work from home. So thats when I decided, why not worry about my hair, and just go natural. I saved money, started using natural ingredients, and eventually adjusted my diet as well.

I don't think that being natural is hard at all. I didn't get the big chop, I have not trimmed my hair, I use no heat, no store products, and rarely comb or brush my hair. I don't plan on getting dreadlocks either. Why? Well I didn't think I need to do any of those things, and with the video below, it does not look like I need to. You do not need to cut, trim or chop your hair off. Just let the relaxed hair grow out, and eventually it will curl! That is what I did, and anyone who wants to keep their length, can do that too. Being natural just was something I eased into doing, it wasn't a movement, or a statement or to go back to my roots or any political plot like that, but for me to have more control with my hair.

I haven't checked my length in a while, and I really don't worry about it. I think having it this way is pretty basic, and I can understand why people would not like to go this route, but to hate your hair because of the texture to the point where you will flip out and go broke just to get a relaxer, is really a problem. No matter how much money you spend, you will never be happy with yourself until you start accepting you. I just thought I'd share my thoughts.
